Man I learnt a lot in the Wilderness

I learnt many things in the bush this week.

Like how to use a pocket knife responsibly! First I learnt NEVER point it at someone, then if whittling cut away from you, most of all when not in use have it closed.

Also I learnt a lot about how to make a proper camp fire (with adult supervision of course): first you get kindling then birch bark (or paper) then ignite. Then add logs, but be sure to leave some air holes, cause that's what the fire needs.

Oh and also I learnt how to use an oar.  Super fun!  I also got to go to a lake and go swimming and fishing.

Have a good summer folks. I know I am!

Happy Summer Viewers!

So last week I was at Discover E camp, and it was awesome and had a lot of way cool science.

Say, how about I make a list about the science I did :

First you make marble works (where you make a bunch of slides and courses for a marble to go through), then we made glow in the dark bouncy slime, then remote control cars, then hover crafts! And at the end you do a spirit off (sorta like how cheerleaders do their thing), and a whole bunch of stuff.

The person that made discovery camp possible was Erin.(hey Erin). I went to the Scientific Discoveries Intermediate camp. The best part is that it is right on the U of A campus and you got to do real science in a real lab.

They run all throughout August, so you should check it out with your parents and see if you can go too!  It was really awesome!

My parents really like it, so I'm going with them.  You should go too.  I'm looking forward to seeing all the solar panels and see diffrent ways that people build houses.

Check out their website www.ecosolar.ca for all the details about the tour and the houses.

There is even a goolge map of all the sites

Eco Spring Break 2011

Nothingbutsnow
Dear reader,

Next week is my spring break from school.  And even though there is nothing but 1 meter of snow in Edmonton and no green at all, I will still persevere, and enjoy my "spring" break.

I am going to make a goal, of doing at least 4 eco things over spring break.

Some of them are:

  • Visiting the farmers market because it supports local farmers,
  • Using the car less, and not idling because that puts carbon dioxide into the air
  • Spring cleaning with eco friendly cleaners cause some cleaners  harm the environment,
  • and using less electricity, therefore needing less coal and making less carbon dioxide.

I will let you know how it goes. You should pick a few goals for your spring break too.

Dont forget tonight is Earth Hour tonight too.  Check out www.earthhour.org for more info.

waste waste waste .

Recycling

Have you ever wondered where your waste went? Well first of all in Edmonton we can put lots of stuff in our blue bags to gets sorted and sorted again instead of everything just getting dumped into the landfill. Hazardous waste gets taken to the EcoStation. There they accept the hazardous materials such as corrosive cleaners, paint / stains, auto motive waste (oil and batteries), lawn and garden chemicals, lighting, appliances and scrap metal, and other stuff like batteries ( any kind .) At the EcoStations around town, they also take construction scrap and loose waste.  That’s what my parents did when they were renovating.  Then instead of getting buried in the ground, something good is done with it.

Parkallen Resturant Review

I think that Parkallen (www.parkallen.com 7018 109 St Edmonton, AB) is the place to be when it comes to food!  Because the atmosphere is great, lots of friendly faces, and the food! OH the FOOD!!!

One of the places you should go is the Parkallen Resturant.  I tried their "Make You Own Masterpiece" Pizza.  I chose a 10" pizza with pepperoni, bacon and pineapple.  Pretty good deal huh? It was so delisious it made my taste buds jump for joy!  And there is some left for lunch tomorrow. The only place I've gotten a deal like that is at the Parkallen Resturant.

My parents said that the hummus was good too.  I tried it, but it wasn't really my thing.  Maybe next time.

This is what happens when you go away on vacation!

Giantzucchini
EcoSammo’s biggest Zucchini!  At 23” long and 5” wide this giant veggie was hiding in the garden when we came back from holidays in Seattle.  Maybe there was a radio active blast while we were gone!?!  How could we ever know.  Maybe we will find some giant carrots toooo.

We are going to make it into a bunch of Zucchini chocolate chip and raisin loaf.  We’ll let you know how it turns out.

brazilian beef farmers beware

Brazilian beef farmers beware for Sam J know's what your up to.  You've been choping down tree's for the past few  years and mother nature isn't happy.

I know this because I read a book about vanishing animals.and there are more than 500 pages of nearly extinct species.

But there is some exciting news hapening, there have been people signing an agreement to let the rainforest grow back.  In October 2009 the Zero Deforestation agreement was signed.  Many major companies are putting their foot down against Brazilian beef farming that harms the rain forest.

This picture is of a Golden Lion Tamarind Monkey, the rarest of the rare.  There are only a few left in the rainforest.
